Blogging Pitfalls: Site Not Indexed on Google yet? You’re Not Alone.

I started this blog about 7 months ago, yet I feel I haven’t quite done as much as I would like to. I have spent more time on other personal projects than here. Nevertheless, in the next few days I will share some of my blogging experiences, which could help someone out there. I feel they’re so many things I could have done differently from the start, which cost me time and effort. However, it’s all worth it because the learning curve has assuaged some of the projects I am working on right now. I know there are many sites out there that talk about common blogging pitfalls in depth, but I would like to dwell on new sites not being indexed by Google. I believe this can be frustrating especially when you know you’ve done everything right. It took me more than 5 months to have this site indexed by Google and I know people that have waited longer than this. I don’t claim that what worked for me could work for you. I simply want to highlight a few things I believe could help you if you found yourself in such a situation (especially novice bloggers). So feel free to ask any questions I can always clarify.

I will make links available soon in the bullet points below.

1. Domain Issues and Security: Includes tools to help you careful select a domain name to avoid picking a name already black-listed in search engines or by the Whois databases.

2. Site Indexing: Ways to deal with a new site not indexed by search engines particularly Google.

  • When and how to create an XML Sitemap (using WP plug-ins).

  • How to sucessfully create a Robot.txt for Google-bot crawlers and rankings.

  • Redirecting a site to a different domain (using htaccess 301 and 302 redirect).

  • Site submissions and Link exchanges.

  • Duplicate content vs. Quality content.

  • How to effectively use Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools for site indexing.

3. Ways to capitalize on the waiting game after you reckon you have done everything else right. Whilst waiting for your site to get indexed by Google there are so many things you could do such as generating quality content for your site that could earn you genuine link exchanges with other sites. The one thing you probably shouldn’t do is to waste your money paying SEO’s that claim could improve your site rankings. You could do that later when you have considerable traffic and want it targeted to a specific audience, but it’s not always necessary. Having said that, I must point out that some new sites almost get indexed instantly in Google or within a very short period of time (1-5 days) with minimal content and effort. This goes to show that as much as content is essential it is not all what you need. You also need to pay attention to other small things and these are the things I am particularly interested in to discuss further.
